Louise Dean - Shiva - Freedom
I have been asked on many occasion what my favourite record of all time is. Whilst reading many DJ's biographies, most seem to pick classics such as Massive Attack's Unfinished Sympathy, Alison Limerick's Where Love Lives, etc.
My favourite track is not one that instantly springs to mind or finds its way to the top of many DJ lists, but one that was a very emotional track back in the mid 1990's.
I'm talking about Shiva's classic vocal house track - 'Freedom', and in particular the Brian Transeau (better known as BT) Subconscious Freedom Remix.

So what makes this tune so special and emotional? Well, for me, I simply love the track and can listen to it over and over again, but what makes this a real roller coaster of emotions is that the lead singer, Louise Dean, was tragically killed by a convicted hit and run driver thirteen years ago next week (18th June 1995), leaving the whole of the clubbing community in complete and utter shock. I clearly remember to this day hearing the news on Pete Tong's Radio One show and being stunned into silence.
Louise was a fantastic vocalist and an energetic performer, and I was lucky enough to see her perform live at Cream in Liverpool many years ago. Her loss was felt by many thousands of people at the time.
To ensure her memory lives on thirteen years after the accident, I have made a link available to the BT Subconscious Freedom Remix for you to enjoy. I know this goes against what I state about sharing music, but I hope FFRR and 7PM Management can forgive me on this occasion.

Hi there!!!
How bizarre is this!!!
First of all, a huge bit of respect to you for acknowledging the magnificence of Louise Dean's voice.
I can't believe the anniversary of her death is 13 years THIS week.
You might find this hard to believe but I'm a DJ and promoter and I helped set up a night called Shiva in London in April 2007 - in memory of Louise Dean and Shiva.
Whenever I DJ at Shiva, I ALWAYS play 'Freedom' and hold up a placard with Louise's photo and a dedication.
It was something that I always wanted to do, commemorate her death. She was taken away WAY too soon and who knows what else they would've or could've come up with. The world was at their feet.
The next Shiva night is tonight, June 20th, at a club called the Whitehouse in London. You can be certain that I'm gonna give it an airing tonight.
It'll be particularly poignant as it's 13 years this week.....
Crazy, huh???
All my best,
Muzz Khan.
Of course the tune will always be tinged with sadness, however some of BT's remixes around 1995 were brilliant, this included along with Not Over Yet and Wild Colour's 'Dreams' were the best. A truly awe inspiring tune that puts a smile on my face when I hear it
I couldn't agree with you more, BT's Circadian Dream mix of the Wild Colour track was excellent (I think I'm going to have to dig it out now and give it a play!).
A DJ friend of my in Rio gave me a few years back the acapella track of "Freedom" and "Work it out" a bless to hear her voice... sadly missed!!I love Loveland's and Morale's mixes!!!!
Hi there
I just dug out both singles on CD and although it brings back memories of a great time, they're bittersweet. Louise Dean had so much more potential and was sadly taken before her time. Freedom is particularly poignant.
13 whole years gone. How did that happen...
Wildcolour - Dreams!!!
Oh, man!!!
You guys know ya stuff - we are SO on the same wavelength!!!
I love it!!!
I've started playing that out, too.
Do any of you guys live in London???
Look me up on Facebook!!!
We should meet up. I'd love for you to come to Shiva. We've now got a residency at Pacha in London.
I got in touch with some of the original members of Shiva to tell them.
It's great to see that we all still appreciate great music....
Long live house music!!! Long live the good times....
:o)

Hi to you all, wondering who this is, well Louise has a sister called Samantha living in Holland, if you want to catch up log on to facebook. I've been looking for years for info about my sister on to how it all went on in the circuit. I'm glad to say i was able to take a look on the inside just before the accident she was just out of this world, she sung pure out of her heart and you can feel and hear it, i miss her very very much and even now 13.5 years later it is still difficult to think she is not here, her music carries on living through people like you and i think louise would be so proud, she always liked to leave a goed impression behind. Well good look with all your fab work and if you have another shiva night, let me know well inadvance, would love to come over. Samantha xxxx
Hi Samantha, it's really good to hear from you and thank you for posting your message. You're absolutely right that Louise put everything into her music and although she only released a handful of songs, you can clearly see what a lasting impact she had the clubbing community.
I think I speak on behalf of many people, especially Muzz, that we really do miss her energy and her incredibly unique voice.
As I mentioned above, Freedom is my favourite song and one that brings back so many happy memories of the house music scene in the mid 1990's. Please feel free to add me as a friend on Facebook (there aren't any other Rob Tarren's!) xx
This brings back memories. Louise had an amazing voice and my friends and I were shocked to hear of her tragic death in '95. Fantastic music and such a shame.
Gone but not forgotten.
RIP
